Son of Jarrot Harris and Jane (Ramsey) Harris, Alanson Harris was a prosperous blacksmith in Augusta County, Virginia. He and his wife Sophia Ann's children were Dr. James H. Harris, MD, DDS (1834-1910); Cynthia, Mary Elizabeth (Harris) Simpson, William R., George F., Franklin L., Sandy, Zachary and Nicholas Harris.

Jarrot (1781-1858) and Jane Ramsey Harris migrated to Montgomery County, Missouri with sons William R., a school teacher, and Jarrot Harris Jr., also a blacksmith. Jarrot's claim on 80 acres in Montgomery County was recorded in 1841. They are buried in the Harris Family Cemetery, Montgomery County, Mo.
