The plane had dropped paratroopers of the 376th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division over southern Sicily.
The airplane was shot down by friendly fire and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea. No trace was ever found of the plane nor the crew. On board was also two observers: Brigadier General Charles L. Keerans (Executive Officer 82nd Airborne Division) and major Tracy Jackson (52nd Troop Carrier Wing).
Captain Armstrong's body was never found and his name is listed on the Wall of Missing of the Sicily Rome Cemetery in Nettuno (Italy).
If his remains would have been recovered, he would have been buried in the temporary GELA cemetery in Sicily.
I am writing a book about the GELA cemetery, where over 1,200 men and women were buried between 1943 and 1947. Hope to finished the book next year July 2013.
One chapter of the book will deal about those whose remains were never accounted for.
