Friedl and his wife were close friends to my family. My sister lived at one of his 5 houses (one in Arizona) many years ago. My mom and his wife were friends. She called her "Bunny"

Friedl died on Sunday, February 26, 1995 in Paradise Valley, Arizona but was buried in Aspen, Colorado. According to what the Aspen Historical Society told me, his obituary appeared in the Aspen Times either the next day or the following Monday- front page, and a memorial service in Aspen was held later that week. I am trying to locate a copy of that newspaper.

Friedl Pfeifer was born in Austria and moved to the United States in 1938. He enlisted in the Army and was stationed with the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale outside of Leadville, Colorado. There he served as a skiing and mountaineering instructor. After the war he settled in Aspen and became a co-founder of the Aspen Skiing Corporation. Friedl Pfeiffer was one of the creators and developed the resort of the town of Aspen, Colorado.

_________

Friedl Pfeifer, 83, a founder of the ski industry in Aspen, Colo., died of colon cancer Sunday in Paradise Valley, Ariz.

A three-time U.S. slalom champion, he helped organize construction of the first chairlift on Aspen Mountain in 1947. The native of Austria also started the Aspen Ski School and the Aspen Ski Club.

The only photos I can show here are very sad to look at. I hope someone is taking care of his family plot now.

The family burial plot is bordered by wrought iron fencing that was custom manufactured.

Headstone - A grayish green marble die that faces toward the west.

A pair of crossed skis is centered above the inscription on the face.

Rising from the top of the stone is a tall wrought iron cross. This is ornamented with extensive scrollwork, along with metal Columbines.

Friedl Pfeifer was inducted into the Aspen Hall of Fame in 1987.
