Found in The State 02 October 1960: Burwell Deas Manning, 4835 Kilbourne Road, died suddenly of a heart attack shortly after lunch yesterday afternoon at his home. Mr. Manning, a son of the late Richard irvine Manning and Lelia Bernard Meredith Manning, was born in Sumter County November 22, 1897. He attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., and was a graduate of the University of Virginia where he was president of the student body. During World Wars I and II he served as an enlisted man. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Mr. Manning, who had lived in Columbia for the past forty years, was prominent in the field of real estate, planning and developing some of Columbia's most beautiful residential areas. The avenues of handsome oak trees planted by him many years ago in the vicinity where Dreher High School is now located are among the beautiful section in Columbia which stand today as a tribute to his vision. Mr. Manning also had a keen interest in farming and agriculture. A quiet and modest man, he had numerous friends both here and out of state who will mourn his passing. Survivors include his widow, the former Katharine Tennent Heath; one daughter Lelia Meredith Manning Manning; two sons, Chappelle Heath Manning and Burwell D Manning, Jr.; five brothers, Vivien M. Manning of Greenville, Bernard Manning of Spartenburg, Wyndham M. Manning, Adger Manning and Preston Manning, all of Columbia and ( ) grandchildren.
