Elizabeth is the daughter of the Hon. New York Supreme Court Justice Joseph Francis Daly and Emma Robinson Barker Daly. She remained single throughout her life, and was well traveled. She attended Miss Baldwin's school in Bryn Mawr, and received a bachelor of arts from the same school in 1901 and a master of arts degree from Columbia in 1902. She was a tutor of English and French at Bryn Mawr until 1906. She also produced amateur theatricals. In 1940 at age 62 her first successful mystery novel was published, and she went on to write 15 more about the character Henry Gamage. In 1960 she received an Edgar award for her body of work. She died in St. Francis Hospital on Long Island.
