The book George & Son: A Legacy of Letters, is written by Nancy Lu Wilson Rose, who in the introduction of the book, states that she is the daughter of Thurston Adger Wilson. The book was written from a collection of letters and memorabilia of her grandfather, George Mendenhall Wilson and his wife and family. The information contained in this bio is taken from her book. From the introduction: George Mendenhall Wilson, renamed George Mendenhall Chapin, and named again George Mendenhall Wilson...lived and died in South Carolina. Orphaned at a young age, George was adopted into the middle-class family of a Charleston merchant. He became a clerk in his father's carriage shop, a fireman, a shipwrecked sailor who sought his fortune "before the mast," an erstwhile farmer, a part-year school teacher...
From Chapter 1: In 1857, the very year both his parents died, young George Mendenhall Wilson, barely five years old, was ushered by his cousin onto a cart or a train or maybe even a buggy, bound for Charleston from Newberry, South Carolina. Alone, he met his adoptive parents, Leonard and Sallie (Moore) Chapin.
From page 55: The exact date of the marriage of George and Mary Jain (Bowers-daughter of Levi Washington Bowers and Lavina Marcilla Bowers, see page 82) is uncertain.

Note: Mary Jane Bowers memorial is not mine, however, her parents are buried in David Bowers Cemetery in Newberry County, SC memorial numbers 83321936 and 83322367

Found in The State 21 May 1905: WILSON-The relatives and friends of MR. and Mrs. GEORGE M. WILSON and family are invited to attend the funeral services of the former at St. Paul's Lutheran church THIS (Sunday) AFTERNOON at 1 o'clock. Interment in Elmwood cemetery. (note: I did not find a full obituary for him)
