John was born in Northern Ireland, and came to America when he was 10 years old. He later married Mary Duff,(1823-1900) also from Ireland and they had a large family.He made a fortune in the restaurant business, and later invested in his son in law's theatre (Augustin's Daly's Theatre), and became lessee of the Standard Theatre in New York. It was here that he was stricken with a massive stoke while watching a performance, which rendered him speechless for several days, and from which he succumbed. His funeral was at St. Xavier's Church on W. 16th in New York, attended by his family and many dignitaries, according to his obituary in the N.Y. Dramatic Mirror. He was 68 years old.
