(FIVE POINTS) The Rev. James Vernon Brown, 92, of Five Points died Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at Bethany House Hospice in Auburn.
Services will be at Five Points Baptist Church Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m. with burial at Randolph Memory Gardens in Roanoke. Visitation will be two hours prior at Jeff Jones Funeral Home in Lafayette.
He was born in Randolph County July 8, 1919. Mr. Brown's family moved from Randolph County to LaGrange, Ga., where he spent 11 years before moving to Five Points, where he graduated from high school. He served in the infantry during World War II, where he was a chaplain, and earned a Bronze Star. Following the war, Mr. Brown graduated from Mercer College in Macon, Ga., and attended South Western Seminary in Texas. He pastured Center, Bethel, Milltown, County Line and Mount Zion Baptist churches in Chambers County; 1st Baptist Church of Daytona Beach, Fla., Tabernacle Baptist Church in Macon, Ga., and established 2nd Baptist Church in Warner Robins, Ga. During semi-retirement, the Vernon Brown Evangelistic Association was established to support revivals in small country churches that could not afford a fulltime evangelist, also financing a radio ministry. Brown held revivals in many states, including Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and others. His ministry ended because of a tragic accident - he was a pedestrian hit by a drunken driver, which resulted in severe brain injury, multiple fractures and lacerations. Brown had remained semi-invalid for the last 9-1/2 years.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife of 75 years, Annie Catherine Lee Brown; two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Paul Wasmer of Chamblee, Ga., and Frankie and Richard Arnold of Macon, Ga.; two grandchildren; one sister, Lender B. Rearden of Valley; two brothers, H.L. Brown of Warner Robins and Leonard Brown of Five Points; and many nieces and nephews.
