Prather was born in Kentucky in 1820 or 1821. He lived in the Rockdale community in Owen County. He was a farmer. On October 14, 1845 he married Mary J. Smith. On August 21, 1863 (at the age of 42) he registered for Civil War Draft Register. When he applied for his Civil War Pension in 1885 he listed himself as an "invalid". Best I can read on the record he served with Army's 114 US 6th Infantry. He and Mary raised a large family consisting of Siblings Eliza J, Archie, Merritt, Willis, George Ann, Stone Wall Jackson, Pemelia, and William.
