Donald was the son of Ruth Cleveland Johnson & Herbert E. Reed. When their marriage ended in the St. Louis area, Donald was still a baby and Ruth returned to West Plains, Missouri, with her son to be near family. She later met and married Charlie Shadwell in 1917 and had more family.
Donald unfortunately contracted tuberculosis. Very little is known about him except that he lived in Iowa a short time with his his Aunt Nettie and her family, they not knowing how ill he was and that he was contagious. None of his Iowa family contracted the disease but his visit allowed him to be with his extended loving family. He returned to Iowa and died shortly thereafter.
