Roman Catholic Cardinal. He shall probably be remembered for his years in the Vatican Curia. Born at Pandon he was educated at the Holy Rosary Seminary of Naga City, earned a doctorate in theology from Manila's Santo Tomas University, and was ordained a Priest at Sorsogon on May 12, 1946. After holding both parish and faculty positions over the next two decades he was consectrated Bishop on February 5, 1968, and was initially the Auxillary of Nueva Caceral. During the 1970s Sanchez served as coadjutor and then as Bishop of Lucena prior to being named Archbishop of Nueva Segovia in 1982. Called to Rome in 1985, he was Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of the Peoples until he was created Cardinal by Pope John Paul II on June 28, 1991, and named Prefect of the Congregation of the Clergy, a post he held until his 1996 age-mandated retirement. The Cardinal remained in Rome until returning to his homeland in April of 2011 to campaign against the Reproductive Health Bill; he died from age related complications.
