Amos was the son of John L and Maria Marckel. After completing school he was a clerk in a hardward store for five years. In 1886 he moved to Perham, Minnesota, and owned and ran a hardware store. He was engaged in the lumber and automobile business in connection with his hardware and implement business. In 1914 he incorporated the entire enterprise as the The Marckel Company. He became the President. In 1906 he formed a partnership with A. H. Haut and they opened a business in Gackle, North Dakota. In 1913 he assisted in the organization of the Hall Hardware Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He became its vice-president and director. This company was engaged in the wholesale hardware business. On 22 Sep 1887 he married Emma C. Coblentz in Columbiana County, Ohio. They had one son, George Edward.

Amos and Emma were members of the Grace Reformed Church.

Amos and son George were Masons.

Amos served Perham as mayor and village recorder.

Son George was born 20 May 1898 and died 10 Oct 1955. He married Ada Stege. They may have divorced.
