Edmund was born on 11 April 1803 in Rutland, Vermont to William Alvord and Lucy Claghorn. He was raised in Albany, New York.

He married Mahala Manuel who was from England on 19 August 1834.

Edmund was a master cabinet maker. He and his older brother William were interested in cabinet making. His brother died in 1937, but Edmund continued in the trade. He was the owner of Alvord & Winne Cabinetry from 1831-1836 working with partner John Winne. The were located on 99 State Street from 1835-1838 and 25 Green from 1839-1840 in Albany, New York.

By 1850, Edmund had relocated with his family to North Bergen in Hudson County, New Jersey where he continued his cabinet business. He is listed in the early craftperson files of early furniture made in New Jersey.

Location in 1860 had not been verified, but by the 1870 US Census, he was living in Yonkers, New York located in Westchester County.
