The son of John Mathias & Christina (Reaver) Loy, he married Martha J. Reifsnyder ca. 1849 and fathered Harry C. (b. 09/08/55), John M. (b. @1859), Anthony Byers (b. 12/12/71), Jacob (b. @1863), George (b. @1865), Edward W. (b. 02/01/69), Frank (b. 11/18/72), and Hezekiah (b. @1879). In 1860, he was a plasterer living in Newton Township, Cumberland County, and stood 5' 8" tall with dark hair and blue eyes..

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Camp McClure, Chambersburg, November 1 with the name "Jacob Long" as a private with Co. F, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863. He also enlisted in Harrisburg August 25, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 27 as a sergeant with Co. H, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

A post-war member Sharp Post No. 371, G.A.R., he died from "organic heart disease."
