Amanda Cordelia "Mandy" Gilliland was the youngest of four children born to Hiram J Gilliland and his first wife, Sarah Amanda Webb.

Hiram and Sarah were married on Jan 15, 1846 in DeKalb Co, AL. Sadly, Sarah died shortly after the birth of her daughter, Amanda.

Hiram married Matilda Catherine White on Jan 18, 1856 in St. Clair Co, AL. Together they had two children, Lucreita J and James Price Gilliland.

Per the 1860 US Census she is listed in the household of Hiram J Gilliland, his wife (her step mother) Matilda C, her sister, Elizabeth Cansadie, her two brothers, John Daley and William Albert and her half sister, Lucreita J Gilliland. The family resided in Township 12, Range 3 East of St. Clair Co, AL.

Amanda's father, Hiram J. died in 1865 at Spanish Fort, in Mobile Bay, AL. Hiram was in the service of the Confederacy at the time of his death. He is buried at Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, AL in the Confederate Rest Section, Row 13.

Amanda Gilliland married Joseph Smith on December 30, 1870 in Marshall Co, AL.

She lies at rest beside her husband at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
