Irvin was raised at New Matamoras and had been a drilling contractor and oil producer. He also was a veteran of World War I. He had attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Mission.

He and K. Marie Nau married 11 Dec. 1919 and had four children: sons John and George Henning, and daughters Helen Henning Kazmer and Glenda Henning Kuderna.

A copy of the full Marietta (Ohio) Times obituary is in obituary notebooks, organized by surname, at the Washington County Historical Society. The clipping and text are not clear about the date of publication compared to date of death.
