Cause of death: accident.
The New York Central railroad made a run from Rochester, arriving late in the Geneva area. Due to an average depth of six inches of snow, and a heavy rain storm the creeks were overflowing into Seneca Lake. The track spanned a bridge which was compromised by the water. When the train attempted to cross on the bridge, it collapsed. The engine remained upright, but the tender careened over, smashing the engineer's cab and spilled the contents of wood and coal upon the engineer, Ignatius Buelte. The fireman, Augustus Sipple, leapt into the water and wasn't recovered until Tuesday morning.
