Artist. Born in Paris, France, he was a French painter noted for expressionism art. After an apprenticeship as a glass painter, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, (1891-98). In the early 1900’s, he made watercolors and gouaches in pastel colors, which founded his reputation as a Fauvist painter. From 1917 to 1927, he concentrated on graphic art, creating a series of expressive art such as his “Miserere’ (1927). He next concentrated nearly exclusively on religious subjects, with intensively brilliant colors reminiscent of medieval stained glass windows. His work was featured in many exhibitions, to include the Museum of Modern Art New York, in 1945 and at the Kunsthaus Zurich, in 1948. He died at the age of 87 in Paris, France.
