According to "Inscriptions on Tombstones in New Haven Prior to 1800." he was the son of Ens. Moses & Mary (Hotchkiss) Atwater of Wallingford. He was born Feb. 23, 1736 and married Nov. 15, 1770 Eunice Thompson of Stratford.

There is no list in detail of the Continental troops who participated in the Battle of Ridgefield. The author has collated from family histories and from various books and papers a few of those who were killed or wounded at Ridgefield. Beside General Wooster, there were the following: -
Colonel Abraham Gould of Fairfield, killed on his horse; Dr. David Atwater of New Haven, killed.

In Memory of Mr. David Atwater a noted Apothecary, a valuable member of Society, just and upright in his Dealings, generously beneficent to the Public, a kind & amiable husband, a faithful Friend, & a firm Advocate for his Country; in defence of which he fell a Volunteer in the Battle at Cumpo-Hill, April 28th AD 1777 AE 41.
