John Henry Gauslin served twice in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. He was a Private in the 14th Wisconsin Infantry, Company A from October 28, 1861 until his discharge due to injury on October 18, 1962. He reenlisted on June 7, 1864 and served as a Corporal in the 39th Wisconsin Infantry, Company G until he was mustered out on September 22, 1864.

John died at the National Soldiers Home in Milwaukee and was buried in the cemetery there.
