Maurice Kenneth Hamilton
Resident of San Bruno
April 30, 1923 - February 22, 2012

Maurice Kenneth Hamilton was born at Cayuga, North Dakota on April 30, 1923 to Virgil Curtis and Olive Mary Hamilton. Maury was 6th born of 12 children; 10 boys and 2 girls.

He died on February 22, 2012 at 88 years of age, in Mills Peninsula Hospital of natural causes, with family singing at his bedside. He is survived by his daughter Leslie, (Earl) Schott, of Fresno, and 2 sons, Paul (Lynn) of Montana, and James (Phyllis) of Merced. His wife Phyllis Margaret (nee Kahl, of 65 years) and middle son, Maurice Robin predeceased him. Grandchildren: Cecelia (Jeff) Wedekind, and Audra, of Fresno, Katie and Amy of Montana, Serena (Nathan) Loftis of Fresno, and Brandon (Christa) of Newport News, VA. He also leaves behind 3 great-grandchildren of Fresno, and 1 of Newport News, and 3 brothers, Curtis, John, and Russell, and many nieces, nephews and loving relatives.

In his early years, during the depression era, he was schooled in one room schoolhouses in small ND towns around Lakota, where he later graduated High School in 1941. Work was hard to come by and his father Virgil moved the family each time it was found. Helping with chores and raising younger siblings, he eventually found work to help support the large family. He worked on Hay- threshing crews, in a creamery, and in shell munitions before entering the military. He served in the US Army Air Force from July 1942-47 on many air bases in the US and the Philippines. He was a fighter pilot instructor and rose to become a Lieutenant Colonel of the USAAF.

In 1943, while stationed at Merced Air Force Base, Maury met his future wife, Phyllis M. Kahl (his "Chick"), at an American Legion dance in Merced, CA where she was a volunteer hostess at USO dances. They met, they danced, and "the rest is history". They were married at Central Presbyterian Church in Merced on February 25th, 1945.

He began his college education at Jamestown College, ND and graduated in 1949 with an AB degree; he then attended Hastings College of Law in San Francisco graduating in 1951 with his LLB degree. Maury began his career as an Attorney in San Francisco for 5 years. Then he moved to San Bruno in 1956 and held a private law practice there for 15 years, where he also served as Mayor (3 terms) and Councilman (2 terms) consecutively from 1960 to 1972. He also served on many state and bay area boards and committees. In 1972 he became City Attorney of San Mateo, serving until 1980. He was a charter member of the Air Force Association, and remained active in the Reserves all his life.

Maury was a very active man, he enjoyed sports: basketball (playing into his 70's) and track being his favorites. He held track records in ND that stood for many years. With his sons; he loved fishing, skiing, and backpack trips. He took his family on many vacation trips about the country.

His children and grandchildren will always remember his adventurous spirit, love of fishing, snappy dress, and pipe in mouth while dancing a "little jig." Once again reunited with his "Chick," their dance continues.

His family is grateful for the help given him by Virginia Cruz in his last week, and Mills Peninsula Hospital of Burlingame, CA.

Services will be held Saturday March 10, 2012 with interment beside his wife (12:00 noon), at Plainsburg Cemetery, Le Grand, CA. A military guard will honor his service to country, followed by a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church, 520 W. 20th Street, Merced, CA.
