Louis was the second of eleven children born to Thomas and Emma Kirby Birdwell.

Thomas was 20 years old and Emma was 22 years old when they welcomed this second son into their home. Louis's brother Jessie was a toddler playing on the floor and moving around by the time his brother Louis was born. Emma learned to provide for the needs of her children one by one as they came into her life and that of her husband, Thomas.
