Vera Somers Hopkins died October 10, 2004 after a long, active life of ninety-four years. She and her deceased husband, John Selden Hopkins, were instrumental in the formation of Pacifica Foundation and KPFA Radio. Vera worked at the Pacifica Foundation for many years as a secretary and historian. Vera and her husband John were involved in the organization of the "Co-ops" in Berkeley and Pleasant Hill and the "Bay Area Funeral Society" of Berkeley. They supported many professional music groups in California like the Sierra Chamber Society. Vera Hopkins was a member of The Mount Diablo Unitarian-Universalist Church of Walnut Creek. Vera graduated from Pomona College as a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1936. She lived with her husband, John, in Lafayette for over fifty years, then moved to Rossmoor in Walnut Creek. Vera spent her last three years at Oak Homes Board and Care in Walnut Creek where she was happy and content. Vera leaves a nephew, Craig Somers and a sister-in-law Kathryn Erlenmeyer. There will be a small Memorial Service and the spreading of her ashes in the Memorial Garden at Mount Diablo Unitarian-Universalist Church. Memorial gifts may be sent to either KPFA Radio or Pacifica Foundation.
