Leonard Stump was the youngest son born to Michael and Catharine (Neff) Stumpf. Some show him as James Leonard or Leonard James though all documents show him only as Leonard or Leonard Sr. to differentiate him from his nephew Leonard Jr. (1766-1827) who was son of brother Michael Stump Jr. and wife Sarah. (Born to German parents, it seems unlikely that he'd be named James-a name not usually used in German families.)

Leonard, youngest son of Michael and Catherine Stump, was born in 1749. A good businessman, he accumulated a large estate including Lot #3 which he inherited from his father and land he bought from his brothers Michael and George --equaling some 366 acres. In 1773, Leonard married Catherine See, the daughter of Michael See and Barbara Harness, a prominent pioneer family.

Around 1775, he and Catherine built a substantial log home for their growing family. The early cabin- 12-16' x 8'- was a one-story double pen structure (ie made up of two separate log cabins covered with a single roof.) Between the two structures was a central chimney with a divided flue. A rear kitchen ell was attached and barns were constructed.

The cabin faced west, about 800 ft. from the South Fork river (a branch of the South Branch of the Potomac.) The flat bottom land along the river was used for crops and pasture while the east side, behind the home, was South Branch Mountain, covered with timber. Years later, a second story was added to the cabin (along with other modifications) making it a two-story log cabin which was still standing in 2001 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Leonard and Catherine had ten children, seven daughters and three sons though only one, Adam, lived to carry on the Stump name.

Writing in 1872, granddaughter, Helen Yoakum Black, lists the children (and their spouses) born to Leonard and Catherine, though she only mentions one son, Adam, the other two Michael and George having died earlier.
"Leonard Stump married Catherine See. They raised seven daughters and one son. Elizabeth married Michael Yoakum my father of Hardy County. Mary Ann married Jonathan Hutton of Tygart's Valley. Catherine Stump married Solomon Harness and went to Wood County. Hannah Stump married William Dyer of Pendleton County. Christine Stump married Nathaniel Pearl [Perrill] went to Pickaway. Ann Stump married Thomas Bonet. Dorothy married William Ray and went to Zanesville, Ohio. Adam Stump married Polly Parsons the belle of Hampshire Co., and by her got at least thirty thousand dollars. Jonathan Hutton was very rich. William Dyer was rich. Solomon Harness was rich Nathan Pearl got very rich. William Ray got very rich Ann was left a widow and remained so. Her father left her rich. Michael Yoakum got very rich."

While Leonard appears to have served as an officer in the Hardy Co milita, his contribution to the Revolutionary War was mostly in the form of material support to the army. (See Virginia State Claims and Josiah Hughes, PIONEER OF WEST VIRGINIA.)

Wife Catherine died in 1827, Leonard in 1829. Both are buried on the Stump farm in the family cemetery, along with an estimated 40 family members. The cemetery is fenced and has three cedar trees. Only the stones of Catherine and Michael I. Stumpf ; and their son Leonard and Catherine Stump are still visible.

The will of Leonard Stump was written May 21, 1827, proved Feb 10, 1829 naming as heirs son Adam, daughters Ann Bonnett, Catherine Harness, Hannah Dyer, Christena Peril, Mary Ann Hutton, grandson Leonard D. Bonnett, Michael Yokum and wife (Elizabeth). Executors were Adam Stump and Wm Dyer, witnesses America and Mortimer Yokum (niece and nephew). No mention of wife or daughter Dorothy who were probably dead by then. Son George had died ca 1810 also.(Hardy County Will Book 4, pp. 369-372)
