David, a Presbyterian minister, was the youngest of five children of John B. Walthall and Helen Kirby Barclay Walthall, who are buried near him. After his mother's death, he was raised by his mother's sister Mary Kirby in Richmond. In her honor, he added the name "Kirby" to his name.

He was ordained on 31 May 1896, and was married on 28 April 1897 to Sallie W. Dalby. He served as pastor of Mizpah Presbyterian Church in Richmond until 1910; 1st Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro to 1925; then Nicholsville (Kentucky) Presbyterian Church until 1941.

He was the author of "History of Richmond Lodge, #10, A.F. & A. M.", a study of the historic Freemason lodge in Richmond.
