Henry Hart was born in Newark, Caledonia County, VT, and was a son of George Hart and Mary Hudson. His siblings included three sisters, Augusta, Cynthia Jane (Mrs. George W. Peavey) and Almira; two brothers, Daniel and William A.; and three other unidentified siblings.

Henry Hart volunteered for service in the Civil War at Burke, Caledonia Co., VT on 1 Nov 1863 and was mustered into the VT 11th Regiment Volunteers, Company K, Heavy Artillery. On the 6th of June 1864, Henry was wounded at Cold Harbor, VA and spent 12 months in hospitals. For the rest of his life, Henry had trouble earning a living due to lameness caused by his war injuries.

He was married first, to Jennette Hudson at Charleston, Orleans Co., VT on 19 Mar 1859. Jennette died of quick consumption in 1865.

Henry appeared in Sangamon Co., IL as a witness to the application of Ellen J. Sullivan Hart, widow of his brother Daniel Hart, for increase of widow's pension, dated 9 Oct 1866. Ellen J. Hart and Henry Hart were married on 4 Jul 1868 in Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL. Ellen J. Hart died 27 Sep 1871.

Henry Hart married a third time on 5 Mar 1872 to Catherine Bateman. Catherine unsuccessfully filed for widow's pension.

Henry Hart married a fourth time on 27 September 1879 in Sangamon Co., IL to S. Jane Cantrall Rubly, widow of Theophilus Joseph Rubly.

Henry Hart, a wounded veteran of the Union Army, lies in an unmarked grave in the Hart family plot in Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
