United States Army General. He was the son of New Jersey Governor Peter Dumont Vroom. He served as 1st Lieutenant, Adjutant in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 12, 1862. He was wounded in action at Crampton's Pass Virgina on September 14, 1862. He was promoted to Major of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on August 28, 1863. He was then brevetted Lieutenant Colonel for gallant and meritorious service during the war on March 13, 1865. He was discharged at Natchez, Mississippi, Circular 39 War Department, Washington D.C. on August 2, 1865 and mustered out on October 24, 1865. He then accepted a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd U.S. Cavalry on April 9, 1867 and remained in service until April 12, 1903. He had retired with the rank of Brigadier General, Inspector General of the Army.
