James L. McCown, for more than 62 years an employee of The
Portland Oregonian, died last night. Early in 1860 he took a job as printer's apprentice on this newspaper and he has been with it as compositor and proofreader ever since. Mr. McCorn bridged the gap between the beginnings of The Daily
Oregonian and the newspaper that it is today.
Three weeks ago Mr. McCown slipped and fell on the sidewalk near his home and sustained injuries which necessitated his being taken to the Portland Sanitarium for treatment. In a few days he recovered sufficiently to leave his bed, but while walking in the hall of the hospital he made a miss-step and his left thigh snapped like a pipestem. The Doctors trussed him up and gave him treatment that was thought best for his case, but the bed became his prison and he began to fail rapidly. The end came at 5:30 last night.
James Levi McCownh was born December 6, 1841, near the present capitol of West Virginia, in Kanawba County, of Scotch and English ancestry. When a boy his parents moved to Missouri and on May 6, 1852, the family started across the plains from Wyandotte, now Kansas City, Kansas for Oregon.
They arrived at Foster's, now Eagle Creek, in Clackamas County, October 3, making the trip in six months and two days. Mr. McCown attended school in the neighborhood of Hardscrabble. When advanced in his studies, he attended the Portland Academy for a short time and then applied to H. L. Pittock for a job on The Oregonian. He got it. From that day until the middle of December, he had been on the job early every day. The death of Mr. Pittock in 1910 ended a lifetime friendship with Jim McCown.
