His mother and brother died on October 18, 1869. Another brother died on October 29, 1869. They are all buried in the Whitesboro Cemetary in Grayson County, Texas,as well as a number of other relatives.

Samuel served in the Border Battalion, 21st Brigade, Texas State Troops during the War Between the States in service to the Confederacy. He was 4th Sgt. and served from 10 October 1862 until 7 January 1863. He was called into service to guard prisoners in Gainesville, Texas.
