Daughter Bridget Burke O'Donnell's obituary provides the only written history located re the early Burkes. The news clipping indicates that "Michael and Winifred were natives of Ireland and came to this country soon after they were married. The family came to Kansas and settled on a farm in Marshall county."
FInd-a-Grave member Jerri Ritter provided information that Michael and Winifred married 23 Feb 1846 at Lisonuffy, Roscommon, Ireland.
Prior to arriving in Kansas, census records show they were in Maryland (1850) and Virginia (1860, that area now West VA). Winnifred is age 36 in the 1870 KS census. As with her husband, her age is all over the map for the different censuses.
The spelling of Winifred's maiden name is somewhat uncertain, the only record of it being on Maggie Burke Rooney and Bridget Burke O'Donnell's death certificates. Maggie's certificate is clearest, however still difficult to read and may say "Donnelin". Bridget's certificate is quite hard to read and may say "Donland".
Her known children are Bridget (born 1848 in Maryland), Mary Ann, Marguerite, Elizabeth, Edward, Catherine (or Cathanne), Michael J., and Ellen Burke (b 1868 in KS).
