John Howard was born in 1831 in Hardin County, Kentucky, the son of Wesley and Mary (Moore) Howard. By 1850 the family had migrated to Hot Spring County, Arkansas. About 1851 John married Elizabeth Frost. During the Civil War he served as a Private in Cocke's/Hawthorn's Arkansas Confederate Infantry Regiment, Company I: Enlisted at Rockport, Arkansas on 4 June 1862; Captured by Union troops at the Battle of Helena, Arkansas on 4 July 1863; Sent to Milarty Prision at Alton, Illinois on 9 July 1863; transferred to Military Prison at Ft. Delaware, Delaware, on 29 February 1864; Released on oath on 19 June 1865. On January 9, 1866, he married a second time to Martha (Robertson) Hall, in Hot Spring County, Arkansas. By 1870, the family was living in Washburn Township, Sebastian County, Arkansas.
