He retired from the West Virginia Board of Education. He was a veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Carpenter .
Mr. Carpenter is survived by his sons, Daniel R. Carpenter of Charleston, Charles Carpenter of Cross Lanes, David James Carpenter of Charleston; daughters, Patricia Landers of Kingston, N.C., Jo Ann Ballew of Charleston, Sharon Jones of Sissonville; sister, Madeline Marion of Poca; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Melvin Sizemore officiating.
Burial will be in Thaxton Cemetery, Wolf Pen Drive.
