Robert A. "Papa" Anderson, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2012.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at McLaren's Chapel in West Des Moines with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery. A visitation with family present will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at McLaren's Chapel.
Bob was born in Knoxville, Iowa to Raymond and Mildred Anderson. The family moved to Des Moines when he was nine. He graduated from Dowling High School and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. As a Staff Sergeant for the Motor Messenger Battalion, he served a tour of duty in Europe.
Upon returning from the service, Bob resumed his career at Iowa-Des Moines National Bank and Norwest Bank (Wells Fargo), which lasted for 44 years. In those early years, Bob met his future wife, Doreen Iverson. They were married on September 9, 1950. Together, they raised three children.
During his years at the bank, he started working as a messenger at the age of 17, advanced to teller, then commercial loan officer and retired as Senior Vice President in charge of all regional credit offices in the state of Iowa. What he enjoyed most during his years at the bank was helping to grow many successful businesses throughout Iowa.
Papa, as he was affectionately known, was a loving and humble man. He will be remembered for his bigger-than-life personality, strong sense of humor and generous heart. Throughout his life, he enjoyed golf, bowling, billiards, table tennis, and a good game of cards. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, father and friend.
Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doreen; three children, Mitch (Molly) Anderson of Omaha, Tim (Jo) Anderson of Urbandale and Jody (Al) Tramontina of West Des Moines; five grandchildren, Jason Anderson, Liz (Alex) Katz, Andrew Anderson, Spencer and Max Tramontina; and one great-grandchild, Gunnar Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Darlene Hardenbrook.
