Mary Nightengale Carter, 92, of Washington, D. C., died at 3:30 a.m. Friday, July 29, 1994, in Carriage Hill Nursing Home, Silver Spring, Md.

Born Feb. 20, 1902, in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Sarah Cato Jones.

She was a 1920 graduate of Chambersburg High School and attended the former Cumberland Valley State Normal School, now Shippensburg University. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Howard University and took courses at the universities of Chicago and Iowa.

Mrs. Carter worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 13 years and taught in Washington public schools for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1971.

For many years she was chairman of the Auditing Committee for the D. C. schools, supervising examination of books for all schools. She also served as a member of the Accrediting Committee of the U.S. Department of Education, visiting schools in all parts of the country for evaluation.

She was a member and regional director of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority from 1939 to 1942 and was a national grand secretary from 1942-44.

In 1941 Mrs. Carter returned to live in Chambersburg, and was an active member of Kittochtinny Historical Society and Corpus Christi roman Catholic Church. Although she returned to Washington in 1985, she frequently visited Chambersburg. In 1990 she participated in her 70th high school reunion, and also returned in 1993 for a family reunion.

She married George E. Nightengale in 1926 and Theodore E. Carter in 1949. Mr. Carter died in 1963.

Surviving are an adopted son, Joseph E. Carter, and a sister, Dr. Louise Jones Hubbard, both of Washington; and 10 nieces and nephews, including Joyce Lovett and Robyn Lovett, both of Chambersburg.

The service was Tuesday in St. Anthony's Church, Washington. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery.
