James was born into a family which would loose it's patriarch in the Civil War. He would be raised by another man.

James had two wives. The first apparently died either in child birth or soon after. His second wife was a tough Scottish woman with whom he had four children.

He worked for the railroad as did two of his sons and his Father-in-law. He apparently liked to hunt birds and there are records in the newspaper of his exploits in the field.

Like many in this line he died rather young due to heart disease.

James had five children:

Leslie, the son of his first wife Alice who was unmarried and childless.

Harriet who was married to Arthur R Curtis and had two children.

Walton Colton married to Gunvor Tallaksen and father of one child.

James Buchanan who was childless and married twice.

William Steven who was married twice and had ten children.
