Civil War Union Army Officer. He first joined the Union Army when he enlisted on June 7, 1861 in the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in as a Corporal in Company H. A few days later, on June 13, 1861, he was promoted to Sergeant. He served the next year and a half with the unit, until he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, and transferred to Company C, 27th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on October 14, 1862.

A few months after joining the 27th NJ as an officer, he was promoted again, this time to 1st Lieutenant, and transferred to Company K on December 23, 1862. He served out his remaining enlistment in that duty, and was honorably mustered out on July 2, 1863.

Early the next year he rejoined the Union war effort, being commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 22nd United States Colored Troops, and was mustered into Company E in January 1864. He was soon tabbed to served on the staff of his brigade commander, Colonel Alonzo G. Draper, as an Acting Assistant Adjutant General.

On September 28, 1904 he filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #1325208, Certificate #1096304, NJ)

On October 2, 1908 his wife, Margaret Simpson, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #905422, Certificate #669436, NJ).
