Jean C. Elgin, age 92, of Kittanning, PA, died Friday, March 2, 2012, at Kittanning Care Center.

She was born on February 23, 1920 in Worthington, PA, the daughter of Arthur and S. Olive (Edwards) Claypoole.

Jean lived in the area all her life and worked for 22 years as the head clerk for the Selective Service System. She also served as a board member after retirement. Jean's faith was very important to her and she was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Kittanning for over 50 years. She was a long-time member of the Gleaners Sunday school class and taught Sunday school for many years. Jean was an art show committee member and a worker at fish dinners.

Jean loved being involved in the community and enjoyed working at polling stations for elections for many years. Swimming was one of Jean's favorite hobbies and she loved participating in water sports. Music was another of Jean's loves, and this was showcased by her 50 year participation in the First United Methodist Church Choir and her many years singing in the Choraliers. Her other favorite pastimes included reading, sewing and knitting. Those who knew Jean will always remember her sweet and loving spirit.

Left to cherish her memory is her sister-in-law, Betty Claypoole, of Raleigh, NC, with whom she spoke very frequently by telephone; nephews, John Claypoole and James Claypoole, of Raleigh, NC, William Claypoole, of Orlando, FL, and Russell Claypoole, of Center Point, TX; nieces, Kathleen Messersmith, of Sebastian, FL, and Carol Kristobak, of Bethel Park, PA; cousin, Hazel McMillin, of Chicora; and many loving friends of Kittanning and surrounding areas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Thomas A. Elgin, who she married August 10, 1957 and passed away in 1979; step-son, Lawrence Elgin; and brothers, Stewart A. and Ernest L. Claypoole.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9PM on Sunday, March 4, 2012, at Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc, 515 N. McKean Street, Kittanning.

Additional visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Monday, March 5, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church of Kittanning, 301 N. Jefferson St., Kittanning, with Rev. Dr. Allyn Ricketts officiating.
