Charles E. Avery was wounded in the right shoulder by a shell fragment at the Battle of Fredericksburg. He was shot in the right arm at the Battle of Gettysburg (Little Round Top) and again in the right arm at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. He was taken prisoner, had his arm amputated by a Confederate surgeon and was sent to Andersonville Prison. He died in 1871 from the effects of his wounds and imprisonment.
