Getchell Widdes, 90, passed away on April 25, 2004 following the death of his beloved wife of 66 years on April 13. He was born in Duluth in 1913 to Sarah and Morris J. Widdes.
He graduated from Central High School, and he continued to participate in high school reunions for 72 years. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Getchell was the second generation owner of what is now known as Widdes Feed and Widdes Trailers in Esko. He was a member of Adas Israel Congregation, the Palestine Lodge #79 AF&AM, Scottish Right Bodies Valley of Duluth, and AAD Temple of the Shrine for over 50 years. He served on the board of directors of Pioneer National Bank and as past president of the Esko Commercial Club. Getchell, together with his wife, volunteered at the Shrine Hospital in Honolulu, and at Miller Dwan Hospital in Duluth. He and his wife enjoyed many years of travel throughout the United States and abroad.
In addition to the recent death of his wife, Helen, Getchell was preceded in death by his sisters: Bess Cowan and Elsie Kane; and his brother Ted "Babe" Widdes.
He is survived by his children: Patti (Melvin) Frisch, Jay (DeeDee) Widdes, and Kitty Widdes (fiancee David Haberman); grandchildren: Adam (Katherine) Frisch, Anne (Daniel) Trockman, Marnie Frisch (Spencer Orman), Hope Frisch, Joshua (Nicole) Widdes, Sara (Matt) Chapman, Brad Altman, Beth Altman (fiancee Wesley Pfeifer), and Bryan Altman; three great grandchildren; sister, Ossie Widdes Periman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Faye and Mayer Krupp; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial in Adas Israel Cemetery.
