From birth order of William's sibblings it appears he was born in MA. Around the age of 5 his family moved to NY where he grew up.

William Taylor in the "Centennial History of Columbus" p. 669 reports that a "William A. and Derinda (Cole) Root, both of whom where natives of New York State, where [he] followed general agriculture and stock raising for many years, subsquently removing to this state [Ohio] where he departed this life January 14, 1894, surviving his wife, who also passed away here by twenty-three years. Mr Root was well known throughout the country in New York state in which he resided as an enterprising man and also as a substantial and desirable citizen."

From his children's birth order it appears this family moved to Ohio after 1836 and before 1840 puting Williams in his mid 30's.

In the 1840 & 50 Cencus William's brother "Uri A. Root" is residing in Monroe, Ashtabula Co., Ohio.

1850 Census has William and his family in Andover, Ashtabula Co., Ohio. William was a farmer. Wife and 6 children are all listed on this record.

It is reported that in 1860 William's mother "Mercy" died in Andover though her stone say 1869.

Finally in the 1870 Census William & Derinda are both still in Andover but children are gone. He died at ripe old age of 84 in 1894.
