MRS. CARL DEAD.

Pneumonia Fatal to Woman Who Was Injured in A Fall, From Which Complications Began.


Mrs. Bird Carl passed away at the family home, seven miles northwest of Goodland, Friday evening, at 8:30 o'clock following a short illness of pneumonia. Five weeks ago Mrs. Carl fell and broke her hip and last week pleurisy developed. The attack of pneumonia followed and she did not have the resistance to withstand the severity of the disease.


Mrs. Carl, before her marriage was Nancy Jane Chandler. She came west with her family during the early settlement of the country and has since made this place her home. She was 62 years of age at the time of her death, being born Oct. 10, 1870 at Quincy, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Carl and their family lived in Goodland for many years, later moving to their farm northwest of town.


Mrs. Carl is survived by her husband and seven children. One son, Martin Carl, died during the World War while in camp, and one daughter, Alpha, also preceded her mother in death. A son and daughter, Kenneth and Minnie, are left in the home. One daughter, Mrs. Mona Fenner, lived in Goodland, and Miss Opal Carl is a nurse in Kansas City. Two sons, Oscar and Clarence and one daughter, Mrs. Carrie Mossey live at Denton, Mont. Mrs. Carl's sister, Mrs. Sadie Boroff was here during her illness as was also her sister-in-law, Mrs. Harve Chandler, both of Stockton.

Nancy Chandler was born Oct. 10, 1869 at Barry, Ill., and departed this life at her home northwest of Goodland, Feb. 10, 1933, at the age of 63 years and 4 months. She came to Kansas with her parents in 1879 and settled in Mitchell county, later moving to Rooks county where she was married to Bird Carl on July 10, 1887. They moved to Goodland in April 1883. With the exception of a few years when they lived in Iowa, they have made their home in Sherman county. To this union twelve children were born, seven of whom survive her. They are Mrs. Carrie Mossey, Oscar and Clarence Carl, all of Denton, Mont., Mrs. Mona Fenner, of Goodland, Minnie and Kenneth of the home and Opal of Kansas City, Mo. Besides her husband she is survived by ten grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Sadie Boroff, of Plainville, Kansas, Mrs. Mary Arrington, of Webster, Kansas and Mrs. Rachel Fairbanks, of Hamilton, Mo., four brothers, Harve Chandler, of Stockton, Kans., John Chandler, of Webster, Kans., Vern Chandler, of Humbolt, Nebr., and Oliver Chandler, of Pasadena, Calif.


In 1921 the Carl family moved to the farm northwest of Goodland where they have since resided. Mrs. Carl was a member of the Christian church, devoted to her faith and ever a friend to those she came in contact with. She was a loving mother and wife. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her but we sorrow not as those who have no hope, for we know that she has only gone from labor to reward.
