A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Leesburg, Cumberland County, August 20, 1864, as "William Bowermaster," mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 25 as a private with Co. G, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865. The reason for using an alias (his mother's maiden name) remains to be discovered. It meant there were two similarly-aged William Bowermasters serving at the same rank in the same company.
He died in Southampton Township, Cumberland County, from "senility & paralysis."
