Dorothy Anne Johnson Clifton (1929 - 2012)

Dorothy Anne Johnson Clifton, 83, passed away at a local hospital at noon Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, with her husband and their son, plus some dear friends at her bedside. Celebration of life: 1:30 p.m. Friday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park, in a Clifton family plot dating back to 1916.

She was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Abilene, to Dorothy Lee Hulsey and Walter Roy Johnson She proceeded through the Abilene public schools, and graduated from Abilene High School in 1946. Her fate took a turn when Burton Clifton returned from his Army service to live with his parents for the summer before returning to his Texas Tech studies, with their meeting on a Sunday at church. After about a year, during which she had moved to Shreveport, La., and he to Lubbock, they were married on June 8, 1947. With Burton still in engineering school, their union was blessed with a baby boy. On award of Burton's degree, the three of them went to Fort Worth in 1949, for a job designing highways. After a period in the district office, the job moved to Mineral Wells, where Dorothy became an important part of the Methodist Church and David became a Cub Scout, with Dorothy becoming a den mother. Burton's job moved back to Fort Worth in 1957 designing high-capacity freeways. The Clifton family joined the new Edge Park Methodist Church, near the new highway district office. Dorothy found her place in leadership of the Women's Society of Christian Service, and in the Chancel Choir. Other important positions led to membership in the Administrative Board of the church. When Tarrant County College opened, she began to take courses in which she was interested. In several years she had taken a big group of courses, with grades near the top of the classes. This drew interest of Texas Wesleyan, which gave her a scholarship for studies resulting in a bachelor's degree. Over the years, she worked occasionally at office management jobs, and in one case was plant manager for an auto parts firm. She was predeceased by her parents, others of that generation, and some of her cousins.

Survivors: Her husband of 64 years, Burton Clifton; son, David Burton Clifton and his wife, Sandra; grandsons, Bobby Clifton and his wife, Lisa, Bert Evan Clifton and his wife, Sarah, and William Clifton; and six great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
