Nellie C. Gaston was the second wife of Orrin Brown. He had come to California in the late 1850s from upstate New York as a young man. He was a cattle rancher and cheese maker near Pescadero on the San Mateo County coast. He and his first wife, Esther Chappell, had a family of six children. After a divorce around 1880, Orrin married Nellie Gaston, who was from San Jose. They had a daughter, Adele, in 1892. Nellie became a widow in 1896 when her husband was killed by his mining partner at their mine in Kern County.
Adele eventually went to medical school at Loma Linda, and Nellie went to live with her there.
Nellie is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose, in the plot with her husband. Adele, who became a physician, is also buried at Oak Hill. Apparently she never married.
