Berry was born the son of John & Elishaba (Berry) Tillman.

He enlisted in the 8th Alabama Infantry, Co. H (Capt. Cleveland's) on 25 June 1861. He was present for the engagements at New Market Bridge 22 December 1861, the Seizure of Yorktown 5 April 1862, and at Williamsburg on 5 May 1862. He was listed as absent sick at Seven Pines 1 June 1862, Gains Mill 27 June 1862, and at Frasers Farm on 30 June 1862. Berry died in the Danville Confederate Hospital in Danville, Virginia and is buried in the Danville National Cemetery.

I have been told that those that died in the Danville Confederate Hospital were buried in this cemetery, unless shipped home for burial by their family. Most of our Southern families didn't have that kind of money. Berry was never released; his record says he died in the hospital and was buried in the cemetery there. Most were buried the same day or day after they died.
