Robert was born in Scotland. Married Elizabeth Cummings Miller at St. Cuthbert's, in Edinburgh. They immigrated to America in 1851, with Robert traveling ahead of his wife, presumably to find residence and work.

Robert made a living as a tin smith and plumber. He owned his own business on Long Island selling stoves, hardware and tinware.

On his death Record, it states there was in inquest made into his death. Apparently he overdosed on laudanum. Official cause of death was "overdose of laudanum- odema of lungs- alcoholism."

I don't believe he purposely overdosed. Robert was probably sick with the flu Or pneumonia and accidentally took too much laudanum.

NOTE: Robert and his wife, Elizabeth, were previously buried in the First Presbyterian Church of Newtown Cemetery. Their remains wer moved to Mount Olivet Cemetery on 4 June 1958.
