Major League Baseball Pioneer. Born Duncan Fraser Curry, in New York City, he worked in the insurance business and in 1842, he was a member of a group known as the "Sporting Gentlemen" who gathered in the afternoons to play a game that became baseball. On September 23, 1845, the New York Knickerbocker baseball club was formally established and Curry was selected as its first president. The Knickerbockers were reported to have been the first official organized baseball club in the history of the sport. He also served on the committee that drafted first set of official written rules for the game of baseball named the Knickerbockers rules. In addition, Curry was one of the founders of the Republic Fire Insurance Company and served as its secretary, (1852-82). He died at age 81 in Brooklyn, New York.
