BRANDON - It is with deep regret, extreme sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful father, Dan C. Douglas Sr., age 85, who passed from this world to the next on February 28, 2012, to be with the love of his life, Sophia (Zsido) Douglas, who predeceased him on February 13, 2008.
Our dad was born in Brandon on May 27, 1926. He was one of 11 children born to Patrick Francis and Elizabeth "Bessie" (Grace) Douglas. He grew up in Brandon and received his education in local Brandon schools. He left home and enlisted into the United States Navy in 1943. He had served on seven different ships throughout WWII. He had served in the Pacific Theater and the North Atlantic, North African and Mediterranean Theaters of Operations. One of his most memorable was serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Ticonderoga. He earned the World War II Victory Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and the European Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Following his honorable discharge, he returned safely home and on December 28, 1946, he married our mom, Sophia A. Zsido, in Proctor. He had worked in equipment maintenance and repair for 23 years at Vermont Marble Co. and over 26 years at General Electric in Rutland. He was a member and past commander of the Brandon American Legion Post #55. He was a 60-year member of Bristol American Legion Post #19, a 40-year member of American Legion Post #31 in Rutland and a 48-year member of VFW Post #648 in Rutland. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had made many hunting trips with his sons to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota up until he was 81. He was a communicant at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brandon.
Surviving is his daughter, Sharon Knapp of Forestdale and her sons Alan Knapp Jr. and Bryce Knapp; a daughter, Donna Ellefson and her husband Jim of Pine Island, Minn., and their children Shane and Christopher Ellefson; a son, Dan "Skip" Douglas Jr. and his wife Judy of Brandon and their daughter Danielle Douglas-Woodbury and her husband Johnny; a son, George Douglas and his wife Jenny of Brandon and their children Robin and Sarah Douglas and Christopher Booska and Missy Laraway; a son, Gary Douglas and his wife Patty of Pine Island, Minn., and their son Dan; a son, Todd Douglas and his wife Diane of Sudbury and their children Erik and Dean Douglas; a special son, Bruce Bushes of Williston; a special nephew, Pat Douglas. Fourteen great-grandchildren, Alexandra Knapp, Tanner Ellefson, Anna Ellefson, Mason Ellefson, Braeden Ellefson, Austin Ellefson and Landon Ellefson, Taylor Ann Stewart, Corrinne Laraway and Tyler Laraway, Cole Booska and Dakota Booska and Caylee Rose and Jon Paul Woodbury, and a great-great-granddaughter, Sophia Lee Duby, also survive him. A brother, Raymond "Corky" Douglas of Brandon, and a sister, Virginia Peletier of Richmond, a cousin, Sister Miriam Ward of Burlington, and several nieces and nephews also survive as well. He was predeceased by three brothers, Patrick Douglas, Robert Douglas and David "Mike" Douglas; two sisters, Mary Trombley and Marguerite Smith; and a son-in-law, Alan Knapp Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Albert "Skip" Baltz, pastor, will be the celebrant. A private graveside committal service and burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Following the ceremony, the family will receive friends at Brandon American Legion Post #55, for a time of fellowship and remembrance.
