Journalist. He served as editor of "New York Tribune" newspaper. He served as United States Minister to France from 1889 to 1892 and was the unsuccessful Republican Vice Presidential candidate in 1892 (with President Benjamin Harrison). He was later the United States Ambassador to Great Britain from 1905 until his death.
