Thomas E. Smith was born in Liberty, Maryland, sometime during August 1848. At enlistment, he was a laborer who stood 5' 6" tall with dark hair and dark eyes. He enlisted in Frederick, Maryland, August 10, 1863, and mustered into federal service the same day at the rank of private with Co. D, 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry, and was detached at various times as a wagoner and to brigade headquarters. According to his compiled military service record, he was 18 at enlistment and 22 at discharge, when he was charged for "spurs lost thru neglect." Of course, he was actually 15 when he enlisted - if he had even reached that birthday yet. He later married Maggie A. ?, 14 years his junior. (Since she was born in 1862, I presume they married no earlier than 1880.) In 1900, they lived in Harrisburg, but he died in Shippensburg on November 27, 1913.
He died from "internal injuries" after being "struck by a moving freight [train] in Penn St. yds of P & R. Railway.
